Fiber Type Options

Our fiber reels are available with several single-mode fiber options, including G.652.D, G.657.A1, G.657.A2, and G.657.B3, allowing customers to select the most suitable fiber according to transmission distance, installation space, and bending requirements.

Fiber optic bend radius comparison for G.652.D, G.657.A1, G.657.A2 and G.657.B3

G.652.D – Standard Single-Mode Fiber

G.652.D is one of the most widely used standard single-mode fibers for telecommunications and general optical transmission networks.

It offers low attenuation, stable transmission performance, and broad compatibility with existing fiber-optic systems. It is suitable for applications where the fiber routing is relatively straight and no extremely tight bends are required.

Typical applications:

  • Long-distance optical transmission
  • Telecom networks
  • Backbone networks
  • Outdoor fiber-optic cables
  • General communication systems

G.657.A1 – Bend-Insensitive Single-Mode Fiber

G.657.A1 is a bend-insensitive single-mode fiber designed to provide better resistance to bending loss than conventional G.652.D fiber.

According to ITU-T G.657, G.657.A1 fiber is suitable for a minimum design bending radius of approximately 10 mm. It is also compliant with G.652.D transmission and interconnection characteristics, making it highly compatible with existing single-mode fiber networks.

Typical applications:

  • FTTH networks
  • Indoor fiber cabling
  • Fiber distribution boxes
  • Communication equipment
  • Applications requiring moderate bending resistance

G.657.A2 – Enhanced Bend-Insensitive Single-Mode Fiber

G.657.A2 provides stronger bending resistance than G.657.A1 and is recommended where the fiber may need to pass through smaller spaces or tighter routing paths.

Its recommended minimum design bending radius is approximately 7.5 mm, compared with approximately 10 mm for G.657.A1. Like G.657.A1, Category A fiber is compatible with G.652.D networks.

At the same 10 mm bending radius and 1550 nm wavelength, the maximum specified macrobending loss is approximately:

  • G.657.A1: 0.75 dB / turn
  • G.657.A2: 0.10 dB / turn

This makes G.657.A2 particularly suitable for installations where the fiber is frequently routed, coiled, or bent in confined spaces.

Typical applications:

  • FTTH drop cables
  • High-density fiber distribution
  • Equipment enclosures
  • Fiber reels and compact storage systems
  • Indoor communication systems
  • Applications with tighter installation space

G.657.B3 – Ultra Bend-Insensitive Single-Mode Fiber

G.657.B3 provides the highest bending resistance among these options and is designed for very small bending radii.

ITU-T G.657 specifies G.657.B3 performance down to a 5 mm bending radius. At 1550 nm, the maximum specified macrobending loss is approximately 0.15 dB for one turn at a 5 mm radius.

Unlike G.657 Category A fiber, Category B fiber is mainly optimized for short-reach applications where extremely tight bending is required. ITU-T identifies typical Category B applications as indoor cabling, premises networks, access-network endpoints, and short-distance interconnections, generally below approximately 1,000 m.

Typical applications:

  • Extremely compact fiber routing
  • Miniature fiber reels
  • Robotics and moving equipment
  • Internal equipment wiring
  • Data-center interconnections
  • Tight indoor installations
  • Applications requiring very small bending radii

Fiber Type Comparison

Fiber Type Main Characteristic Recommended Minimum Design Bend Radius G.652.D Compatibility Typical Application
G.652.D Standard single-mode fiber Standard routing requirements — Telecom, backbone, long-distance transmission
G.657.A1 Bend-insensitive 10 mm Yes FTTH, indoor cabling, general compact routing
G.657.A2 Enhanced bend-insensitive 7.5 mm Yes Fiber reels, FTTH, equipment, high-density cabling
G.657.B3 Ultra bend-insensitive 5 mm Not positioned as full G.652.D-compatible Category A fiber Very tight bends, compact equipment, short-reach applications

Which Fiber Should You Choose?

For general telecommunications and long-distance transmission, G.652.D remains a cost-effective and widely compatible option.

For applications requiring better bending performance while maintaining compatibility with conventional G.652.D networks, G.657.A1 is a practical choice.

For fiber reels, compact equipment, FTTH installations, and applications where the fiber may be repeatedly routed around smaller bends, G.657.A2 is generally the recommended option because it provides an excellent balance between bending performance and network compatibility.

For applications with extremely limited installation space and very tight bending requirements, G.657.B3 provides the strongest bend-insensitive performance.

Recommended Configuration for Fiber Reels

For most fiber reel and fiber spool applications, we recommend:

G.657.A2 Bend-Insensitive Single-Mode Fiber

It provides excellent bending resistance, reliable optical performance, and compatibility with conventional G.652.D single-mode fiber networks, making it suitable for both fixed installations and portable fiber deployment systems.
